After having World History sophomore year and learning about the different events throughout history, Germany has always caught my attention whether it is about the holocaust or Hitler. But the Treaty of Versailles put Germany in a depression it has never been in before, so that’s how I got around to choosing this as my NHD topic. My topic is important because of the impact it had on Germany, and how other countries basically took away all rights from a country and crippled them. The treaty can also be blamed for the rise of a vicious individual named Hitler and the start of WW2.
I found most of my research on the internet, but I already had a lot of prior knowledge about the Treaty of Versailles and everyone that was involved. I basically found my research from my history teacher from sophomore year. One source that was helpful is from the Colby.edu website, it was helpful because it talked about Wilson’s Fourteen points and how he demanded that Europe should be reorganized along the lines of nationality, and that’s how Germany’s land was broken. Another helpful source a European history website, it was helpful because it gives an overview of everything that happened, even a background. It also talks about the Big Three and how they each had different desires.
During my research the only problems I encountered was finding various sources and information that didn’t talk about the same things. Most of the information that’s out there discusses the same things that the last source gave me, just in a different manner, there needs to be more of a variety.
My topic fits into the Contest theme because the Allies had the right to stop the war and make a treaty punishing Germany because Germany was disturbing the peace of the world; they were a highly militarized country that waged war on many other countries to take them over. On the other hand, Germany had taken the responsible and made reparations to the Allies for damages caused during the war. My topic is important in history because the treaty forced Germany to admit total blame for World War 1 and to make reparations to the Allies. It also forced them to weaken their military leaving them vulnerable to attacks from other countries.
