Physical Effect
The Treaty of Versailles had many effects on Germany, and one of them was territories being taken away from them. These pictures show how Europe was before and after 1919. As you can see before 1919, Germany and Austria-Hungary owned much of Europe, but after 1919 their lands were reduced and broken up into different countries like Poland, Romania, Bulgaria etc. The Alsace and Lorraine provinces was returned to France, and all of Germany's colonies overseas were annexed by the Allies.
Financial Effect
The Treaty also had a financial effect on Germany, because it blamed Germany for the first World War. Germany was held accountable for the cost of the war and had to pay reparations to the Allies each month and overall these payments would total to about $33 billion dollars. The reason this had a bad effect on Germany is because they had to rebuild their own economy, and they lost a rich source of income from raw materials because of how their colonies and other areas ceded to other countries, therefore Germany lost the raw materials with those lands.
Political Effect
The political effect the Treaty had on Germany was taking away all their army, and turning them from a Monarchy to a Republic in the 1919 revolution. The treaty was a major reason for the rise of fascism in the Weimar republic.
Military Effect
- The army was limited to 100,000 men.
- All soldiers had to be volunteers
- Germany was not allowed to have Tanks, Submarines or military aircraft
- The Navy could only have six battleships
- The Rhineland was demilitarized
